Carmen Gassi > 2012 – present

High Rendition Jazz is proud to have our very highly-regarded and talented Musical Director who inspires our young musicians to consistently strive to play their very best.

Education – Carmen holds an Honours Degree in Music from the University of Western Ontario, a Masters of Music Degree, and a Bachelor of Education Degree.

Teaching – Carmen has been teaching instrumental music for the past 16 years. He has taught for the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) at Albert Campbell C.I. and R.H. King Academy. He is currently the Head of Arts and Moderns at White Oaks Secondary School for the Halton District School Board (HDSB) in Oakville, Ontario.

Musical Experience – Carmen performs both as a soloist, and as an ensemble member. He is currently the Principal Clarinet with both Kindred Spirits Orchestra and the Brampton Symphony Orchestra.

Conducting Experience – Carmen has experience conducting both large and small groups. He conducts the White Oaks Secondary School Concert Band, is the Assistant conductor with the Brampton Symphony Orchestra and Brampton Youth Orchestra, has conducted the Halton Senior Winds Showcase Band, and of course – he conducts our award winning band – High Rendition Jazz.

Awards – Carmen won the Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2012 (video), and more recently the Keith Mann Outstanding Band Director Award for White Oaks Secondary School – MusicFest Canada at 2018.

Darryl Eaton > 2009 – 2012

Darryl Eaton began his career as principal trumpet and trumpet soloist with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was educated at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, the University of Western Ontario and the University of Toronto. Darryl also performed in a similar capacity with the Expo Band at the World’s Fair in Montreal in 1967, and later toured with the National Ballet of Canada, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, and the big bands of Buddy Rich, Stan Kenton and Canadian jazz icon Phil Nimmons. He was a successful freelance musician in Toronto where he performed with Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Bob Hope, Smokey Robinson, The Beach Boys, Paul Anka, The Supremes, and many others.

Through the 2005-2006 season, Darryl was the guest conductor of the Symphonic Band at the University of Toronto. He was conductor of the Hannaford Youth Band from 2006-2011. He also conducted High Rendition Jazz Band from 2009-2012. In 1999, Darryl became conductor of the City of Brampton Concert Band, and enjoyed many wonderful band trips, recordings, and concerts until he retired in 2013.

Dan Glowala > 2009 – 2012

Dan Glowala was born and raised in Brantford, Ontario, where he was afforded many wonderful opportunities to perform in festivals and concerts as he began his musical journey on the piano. His developing interest in percussion led him to the University of Western Ontario where he discovered the wonderful world of music education. London also provided Dan with numerous performance outlets including an occasional concert with the London Symphony Orchestra, and many performances with Western’s Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble.

Dan completed his Bachelor of Music Honors Music Education degree, continued on to receive his Bachelor of Music from the University of Western Ontario, and later attained his Music Specialist from the University of Toronto. He developed a taste for Jazz, Blues, Rock and Funk music while playing in numerous bands. Dan has worked as a music educator in the York Region District School Board and for the past four years he has been sharing the gift of music with his students in the Halton District School Board. Dan is currently a music educator at Sir Ernest MacMillanPublic School in Burlington.

Kevin Anderson > 2008 – 2009

Kevin is the Head of Music at Woodbridge College and is a band member of the Royal Regiment of Canada.

Brian Vincent > 2007 – 2009

Brian’s original involvement as co-conductor of the Halton Junior Jazz band sparked the idea for a medium where young energetic musicians could continue their love for jazz throughout high school. From that single idea, High Rendition Jazz was born. Brian is on the music staff at T. A. Blakelock High School, and is also the Director of Senior Performing Ensembles at the school.
